Mark Lieb, Clarinetist and Artistic Director
Mark Lieb is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Phoenix Ensemble. Lieb is a graduate of Northwestern University and The Juilliard School, where he studied clarinet performance with Robert Marcellus, former Principal clarinet with the Cleveland Orchestra, and David Shifrin, clarinet soloist and former Artistic Director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He has been an active professional freelance musician since 1991, performing with many orchestras, opera companies, chamber ensembles, and new music groups in New York City. He has a special love for chamber music, and has been the guiding force behind the Phoenix Ensemble for 25 years. With various ensembles he has toured throughout the US, Europe, and Asia, and has recorded with New World Records, Mode Records, Furious Artisans, Newport Classics, Dorian, Innova, Albany Records, PARMA / Navona and BMG Classics labels. He has arts education experience with the Juilliard Community Service Fellowship Program, New York Pops Salute to Music Program, Young Audiences, and Midori and Friends. In addition, he has had prior development experience, serving for two years as the Manager of Foundation Relations with the Big Apple Circus.
The Phoenix Ensemble is a mixed instrument chamber music ensemble based in New York City. The group was founded in 1992 with two main goals; to inspire a new and diverse audience for art music through performances, recordings, and residencies in schools and underserved communities, and to encourage the creation of new works as well as make accessible important music of our time.
The Phoenix Ensemble is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, established in September of 1992. All donations made to us are 100% tax deductible.
